CANDLES IN THE DARK: the ‘Slipper Chapel’ in remote Walsingam was where pilgrims left their shoes so they could walk the last mile barefoot. A young Henry VIII was among them; later, the prior of Walsingam hoped to be spared the King’s wrath because of this. He was hung, drawn and quartered, and Walsingham mercilessly stripped.
